For many US importers, the phrase "equipment unavailability" lands like an invoice with no explanation attached. Carriers cite it. Freight forwarders relay it. And importers absorb the resulting surcharges, delays, and rate premiums without ever fully understanding the mechanics behind them. At the heart of this problem is a structural inefficiency that has plagued container shipping for decades: the relentless movement of empty boxes across port corridors that never quite balances itself out.
In 2024, this imbalance is not improving. It is, in many respects, deepening — and US importers who fail to account for it in their logistics planning are paying a steep and largely avoidable price.
What Equipment Repositioning Actually Means
Container shipping is, by design, a circular business. In the interim, the importers who approach equipment availability as a strategic logistics variable — rather than an unpredictable external force — will consistently outperform those who do not.
